Heavy-Duty Linear Actuator

The history of heavy-duty linear actuators goes back much farther than you may think. In fact, it begins in the 1st century AD, with the appearance of Hero of Alexandria’s famous aeolipile — the first steam engine ever created.

Over one thousand years later, in the mid-1670s, the French physicist, Denis Papin, made the next great leap in steam tech and created the first steam-powered cylinder. This powerful invention is what gave linear actuators their shape was used as a piston to power steam engines and eventually locomotives.

The next great development came about in the 1800s, with the invention of compressed air cylinders. These were used by Xhiter Anckeleman, in 1938, to create the very first pneumatic actuators — legitimate actuators were finally on the scene!

Nonetheless, while pneumatic and hydraulic actuators have been in use since the early 1900s, it wasn’t until 1979 that the first electric linear actuator was developed. The idea came to the Danish engineer Bent Jensen while trying to improve a friend’s wheelchair.

With the electric linear actuator at last invented, innovation skyrocketed! Actuators got bigger, stronger, and faster, and within a few decades, the heavy-duty electric linear actuator was born.

What is a Heavy-Duty Linear Actuator?

A heavy-duty electric linear actuator is an actuator that has been designed to function in the harshest of environments.

For example, the heavy-duty actuators here at Creative Motion Control are based on our decades of experience designing, manufacturing, and testing actuators for extreme conditions.

Our rugged actuators function just as well in mud, sand, slush, snow, heat, and water, as they do in clean, climate-controlled workspaces.

What Makes it Heavy Duty?

Heavy-duty actuators need to be able to function for as long as possible, in the worst environments possible, with as little maintenance as possible. Here are some of the ways Creative Motion Control goes the extra mile to ensure that we manufacture the most robust actuators on the market.

Heavy-Duty Actuators Offer Exceptional Performance

Creative Motion Control’s High-Performance Roller Screw (PRS) Series provides a high force electromechanical solution to convert rotary motion into axial force, or vice versa.

Our heavy-duty roller screws offer outstanding reliability and flexibility for the most demanding applications. Additional roller screw features include:

  • Longer life
  • High efficiency, even with shallow leads
  • Steep lead capacity
  • Very high load capacities
  • High rotational speed and acceleration
  • Stiffness/shock tolerance

Another example of exceptional performance can be seen in our grooved roller bearings, which feature:

  • Significantly increased life. By virtue of the increase in dynamic load capacity, life increases by an order of magnitude. CMC bearing life is generally five to ten times longer than that of competitive bearings.
  • Larger load capacity. CMC bearings are capable of handling significantly higher loads than the competition.
For example, compared to SKF’s best performing angular contact ball bearing (Explorer), specifically the 7313 BEGAP in a back-to-back or face-to-face duplex configuration, the CMC 300S65.140.66 has 2.2 times the dynamic thrust load-carrying capacity than the best performing equivalent sized SKF bearing.

Built to Withstand the Unique Conditions of Your Operating Environment

Creative Motion Control has developed a number of bearing performance models and computer programs that we use to predict the ring and raceway stresses as well as the thermal performance of bearings.

These performance models can be run for a selected application as functions of the mounting clearances, lubrication conditions, bearing operating conditions and application environment. This ensures that when you buy an actuator from us, it is designed to meet the exact operating conditions that you expect it will face.

For example, grease is a popular method of lubricating rolling element bearings. However, grease is not suitable for applications where high speeds and heavy loads are combined. This is because most greases will struggle to carry away high levels of heat.

Because many heavy-duty actuators are used in conditions that combine high speed and heavy loads, we offer innovative solutions, like greases containing thickening agents other than metallic soaps because they offer good resistance to heat and they are water-resistant. More specialized greases are also available for high and low temperatures, exposure to moisture and other aggressive operating conditions.

Minimal Maintenance

Our roller screws are a great example of how our heavy-duty actuators require minimal maintenance. When it comes to roller screws, we understand that oil lubrication is the optimal lubrication available. But, we recognized early on that oil maintenance is costly and time-consuming.

For this reason, our experts have developed a unique solution that solves this problem — we completely fill our CPD actuators with oil. Due to this innovation, the majority of our CPD series of actuators are maintenance-free for the life of the unit.

How Does a Heavy-Duty Linear Actuator Get Used?

Our heavy-duty electric linear actuators are used in a wide variety of industries, facing every kind of environment imaginable.

Manufacturing Applications

Creative Motion Control’s actuators can be found in automotive, forestry, aerospace, and other manufacturing industries.

Our electric actuators help manufacturers avoid the heavy energy costs, extensive maintenance costs, and fluid leak risks posed by hydraulic and pneumatic actuators. Additionally, our heavy-duty machines have much faster changeover, are more precise, incur a smaller footprint, require minimal maintenance (if any), and dramatically reduce energy consumption.

The high-load/high-speed abilities of our actuators make them ideal for:

  • Crimping
  • Bending
  • Stamping
  • Broaching
  • Molding
  • And any other high-force application

High-Risk Motion Applications

This includes simulation, defense, aerospace, and other high-risk applications. The actuators used in these industries need to be expertly designed, manufactured from the highest-rated materials, and able to work the first time, every time.

Creative Motion Control’s heavy-duty electric linear actuators are rugged machines that are able to continue functioning in the harshest environments. Which is why our actuators are trusted by both the military and aerospace.

You can find our heavy-duty actuators being used for:

  • Weapons positioning and loading
  • Autonomous vehicle control
  • Jet blast deflector operation
  • Cargo conveyors
  • Door and hatch actuation
  • And any other high-risk application
